About BenefitLense

A free tool built to help job seekers make smarter, more informed career decisions.

Our Mission

Most job seekers compare offers based on base salary alone — but that's only part of the picture. Benefits can represent 30–40% of your total compensation, and the difference between two packages can easily exceed $15,000 per year once you account for health insurance, retirement contributions, paid leave, and equity.

BenefitLense was built to close that gap. We translate abstract benefits into concrete dollar values so you can make an apples-to-apples comparison between any two job offers — quickly, clearly, and without needing a financial advisor.

How Our Calculations Work

Every calculation in BenefitLense is based on widely accepted financial formulas used by HR professionals and compensation analysts. Here's how we value each benefit category:

PTO and Sick Days

Each day of paid time off is worth your daily rate: Annual Salary ÷ 260 working days. This is the standard method used by compensation professionals.

401(k) Employer Match

We calculate the actual dollar amount your employer contributes based on your salary and their match percentage/limit. This is free money that directly increases your compensation.

Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance

We calculate your annual out-of-pocket premium costs (employee portion only) and show them as a negative value — because a plan with lower premiums is worth more to you.

Parental Leave

Paid parental leave is valued as: (Annual Salary ÷ 52 weeks) × Number of paid weeks. This represents the compensation you receive during leave that you would otherwise need to fund yourself.

Signing Bonus

Signing bonuses are amortized over a 2-year clawback period, which is the industry standard. A $20,000 bonus with a 2-year clawback is worth $10,000/year in effective compensation.

Equity and Stock

For public company RSUs, we use the annual grant value divided by the vesting period. For private company equity, we recommend applying a conservative discount to account for illiquidity and uncertainty.

Privacy by Design

BenefitLense is a fully static website. All calculations happen entirely in your browser — no data is ever sent to a server, stored in a database, or shared with third parties. We don't use cookies, we don't collect email addresses, and we don't require an account.
